              ACCESS TO MARKETS 

Greene County provides the business or industrial prospect with a wealth of transportation options -- including air, highway, railroad, motor freight, waterway, bus, and and parcel services.

HIGHWAYS - Greene County is conveniently located 1 mile from Interstate 20-59 and less than 10 miles away from 3 other State and Federal Highways.  The highways give a direct trucking link to the Southeast and Midwest, a direct route to the ports on the Gulf of Mexico, and is home of two trucking terminals (Builders Transport and McElroy Truck Lines) with links to the Midwest.

AIRPORTSThe nearest commercial service is 90 miles away in Meridian, MS.  The airport's major carriers are Delta, American Airlines, and Northwest.  However, Greene County gives access to a lighted concrete runway with aircraft tiedowns and hangers in Eutaw.

RAIL Norfolk Southern gives a direct link to the Gulf of Mexico via Biloxi, MS or by way of Mobile, AL.  It also gives access to any Southeastern ports or the Midwest through Memphis, TN and connects with Burlington Northern.

INCENTIVES


GREENE-SUMTER ENTERPRISE COMMUNITY PROGRAM - This program is designed to specifically provide economic opportunity by creating jobs in the community and region as well as job training, sustainable community development by coordinating economic development, and community-based partnerships with political and governmental leadership.  Grants are available through this program to seed money and matching funds for infrastructure development in the Enterprise Community area.  The grants provide assistance in the following areas: engineering and pre-development costs for water, sewer, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects related to business development and expansion for new job development.

STATE INCENTIVES - West Alabama is part of the Alabama Enterprise Zone Program.  Within this program are some of the best state tax and non-tax incentives in the country.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

POST SECONDARY EDUCATION

The University of West Alabama (UWA): A four-year college with a distinguished staff and an outstanding industrial technology program.  The division offers training for industrial maintenance, including hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, and computer control systems.  The UWA Technical Division and the College of Business are programs in management, finance, accounting, and statistical quality control.  These combined programs assist students in being prepared for the modern day workforce.  UWA offers a wide variety of programs ranging from industrial maintenance to industrial technology.

The University of Alabama (UA): One of the most prominent schools in the state of Alabama, the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama has some of America's top students. It is a university full of diversity and school pride. The University of Alabama is well known for its dedicated sports fans and the academic excellence of its students. UA offers more than just a diverse campus life, it also host some of the best faculty and staff in America.

Auburn University - A prestigious university in the state of Alabama that offers a wide range of baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate programs.  The college provides their students with many technical facilities and resources to meet their educational needs. 

Stillman College - A historical African-American college that offers prominent studies primarily in the divisions of business, education, and arts and sciences as well as pre-medical and pre-law programs.  The college also contains the Stillman Management Institute, a division specially designed for adult learners who work full-time and wish to continue their education. 

Shelton State Community College: Located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, this college offers a full range of technical skill training with a continuous program in driver training-oriented toward commercial driver certification.  A pool of drivers are available each training cycle.

  RELOCATION/EXPANSION ASSISTANCE


Greene County takes an aggressive approach in assisting business with their relocation/expansion needs. This assistance is tailored to your particular circumstances and current needs.

SITE SELECTION

TAX CREDITS - Greene County has been designated as an Enterprise Zone which provide state income tax credits for job creation, capital investment, infrastructure improvements and other activities. Many properties in the Enterprise Zone are in prime development locations.

TRAINING - Many companies find that upgrading their employee skills is a critical part of their relocation or expansion.  Greene County has been a leader in accessing state funds for training purposes. These training dollars are flexible and can help a company meet an important need while reducing its cost to improve productivity.

REFERRALS - Businesses wishing to expand or relocate often have needs for financing, design services, local construction companies, etc. Greene County Economic Development maintains contact with companies in these areas and can make referrals as needed to help save time and money.
